Having graduated from University of Miami, Coral Gables Florida, USA in 1980 as a Computer Engineer, Riyanto Sofyan went on to obtain his MBA degree from the European University, Belgium in 1990. He studied the hotel business and management through various seminars and courses from Ecole Hotelier de Lausanne, Switzerland and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts, USA. Growing in the Hotel and Property business environment, in late 1981 he left his career as a Computer Engineer in leading computer companies in the UK and the USA to focus on developing and managing hotels and properties, then bringing his company to go public in 1989, where its Initial Public O‑ering (IPO) of shares was oversubscribed by 300%. With his 31 years of experience in conceiving, developing, managing, and operating property and hotel projects in Indonesia, he has successfully developed a new concept, instilling the substance of Islamic values in the Hospitality Industry that can be accepted by the market.
